Effects of the EU regulation on Packaging & Packaging waste
With the proposal of the European regulation on packaging & packaging waste it has been established:
Recyclability of packaging
- By 2030: all packaging designed for recycling
- By 2035: recyclable at scale
- the EPR (extended producer responsibility) fees are based on recyclability performance grades
Recycled packaging
- Different binding targets related depending on the type of packaging
- the EPR fees are based on the % of recycled content in packaging
Compostable packaging
- Compostable plastics is mandatory only when it brings a clear benefit for the environment or for human health
- Other plastic packaging should go into recycling processes with a design that ensures that it does not affect the recyclability of other waste streams
